Makalu Base Camp Trek

The Makalu Base Camp Trek is a serious Himalayan journey into one of Nepal's wildest and least-visited regions. Instead of busy lodge towns and crowded trails, you walk through quiet Rai villages, steep forest ridges, misty rhododendron slopes and the spectacular U-shaped Barun Valley beneath the ice walls of Makalu, Chamlang and Baruntse. This route feels remote from the very start, and that sense of remoteness only grows stronger as you approach Makalu Base Camp at around 4,870 m.

Eagle Trail Escapes designs this itinerary for experienced trekkers who are looking for real wilderness and cultural depth rather than a commercial highway. We keep group sizes small, work with locally operated teahouses and homestays in the lower villages, and use a full camping setup in the higher Barun Valley. Our focus is on safe acclimatization, honest pacing, and meaningful encounters with the people who call Makalu‑Barun home.

This 20-day program builds in essential weather buffers and acclimatization time, allowing you to enjoy everything that makes this region special: massive vertical relief, one of the richest biodiversity zones in the Himalaya, and the feeling of trekking on a genuine expedition route that very few visitors ever reach.
