The Kanchenjunga South Base Camp Trek takes you into the wild Yalung and Oktang valleys on the southern flank of the world’s third-highest mountain. Starting from the lush middle hills around Taplejung, the trail passes through terraced fields, cardamom farms and traditional Limbu and Rai villages before climbing into the subalpine forests and glacial basins that face the immense south wall of Kanchenjunga.
This itinerary follows the classic route via Yamphuding, Naya Jhorini, Tseram and Ramche all the way to Oktang, the dramatic viewpoint near South Base Camp. From here you stand almost beneath the icefalls of Kanchenjunga and Jannu, surrounded by a cirque of 7000 and 8000-metre peaks. Because the south side is less frequented than the north, the journey feels particularly remote and intimate. Simple family-run teahouses, seasonal yak pastures and quiet forest trails make this trek ideal for experienced hikers looking for a wilder, more exploratory journey.
