Kanchenjunga North & South Base Camp Trek

The Kanchenjunga North & South Base Camp Trek is one of the most complete journeys you can make in the eastern Himalaya. Instead of choosing between the North (Pangpema) or South (Oktang) approaches, this long wilderness itinerary links both sides of the mountain into a single grand circuit. You begin from the lush hills above Taplejung, walk through Limbu and Rai villages, climb into rhododendron and bamboo forests, then push into the high cirques of Ramche, Oktang, Kambachen and Lhonak.

On the south side you look directly into the icefalls and hanging glaciers above Yalung Glacier near Oktang, with Kanchenjunga’s massive south face towering above you. Crossing the Sele La pass system, you then enter the northern valleys, where stone-built villages like Ghunsa and Kambachen sit beneath huge ice walls. Finally, you hike to the Pangpema/North Base Camp viewpoint above Lhonak for a sweeping panorama of Kanchenjunga and its satellite peaks.

This is a serious, multi-week trek designed for strong, experienced hikers who want fewer crowds and more immersion. Eagle Trail Escapes builds the itinerary around local, family-run teahouses, responsible trail practices, and realistic pacing so that international trekkers can experience Kanchenjunga in a way that is both demanding and deeply rewarding.
